Experiencing life as a university student in America
As a young person I always dreamed of going to the United States to get further studies. However the dream always seemed piped to me since I did not have the funds to do. The only way I could get what I want was to get a scholarship and I was pretty glad when that finally happened and I got a scholarship from world learning and got a chance to pursue banking and finance.
Life and studying in the United States is so different from Serbia especially due to the language barrier. Since I was familiar with only Serbian and Hungarian it was hard to follow up anything in class and learning English is the first thing I had to do. However other students always seem to pick up on me as I could not understand what they were saying thus I became a loner more and more as the days went by.
On the other hand since the libraries are always equipped and the professors always willing to teach and explain things I have no excuse to fail (well except from the English part) as a University travel international as all eyes are on me. This is quite different in Serbia as everyone seems involved in your education even though facilities are not that good when compared. I work hard so as to pass and maintain my scholarship and stay in the land of milk and honey.
Speaking about staying in America there are some good things I never expected to taste, there’s nothing as good as McDonald’s burgers and KFC chicken. I get myself going there every day after school just to indulge. Since here there’s nobody who cares about what you eat and how you are I happen to visit the place on a daily basis happily eating as much as I can afford in a day I can even feel my weight creeping up.
Clothes on the other hand are some thing I did not expect to particularly fancy, I mean I used to be modestly dressed, no not even modestly fully covered all the time. The culture is very strict in Serbia and things just seem to be constricted all the time. Now I wear what I feel like and when I look in the mirror all I can do is smile and is happy about it.
Night life is ever present in united states, I go to a party today I can go to another anytime I feel like it regardless of whether it’s a weekday or not. However I have to discipline myself as I know I have to keep time to study if not I will flank and that means only one thing, I’m on the next plane to Serbia something I no longer fancy.
Beaches are another thing I experienced for the first time; Serbia being a landlocked country meant I could only do exercises in swimming pools if there’s any around now it’s just epic, just wondering why not many Americans like swimming.
I’m not saying I’m not patriotic and all that I just mean I keep on getting freedoms as a University travel international that seemed all impossible from Serbia. Great education is guaranteed and besides by the time I graduate I’m sure to get a good job if I go back home since my degree will be worth it from a prestigious and acknowledged university.
